The Rematch: The second Colorado vs. Virginia Wine Taste-Off went down on August 24 at Bonacquisti Winery in Denver. The first Colorado-Virginia taste-off in March featured the red wines of each state and ended in a draw. For our second meeting our theme was ‘Summer Wines’ of Colorado and Virginia. The intent of this tasting was not to declare one state’s wines better than the other, but rather to taste wines from two states with little nationwide distribution and to showcase wines that rarely receive ‘out-of-state’ attention they each deserve. Mission accomplished! A good time was had by all, and each state’s wines picked up a few new fans.

Tuesday, August 24, will arguably go down in history as the biggest day in the history of drinking Colorado and Virginia wines being in the same room, which can only mean one thing: The second blind tasting between the two states is set. These two under-the-radar wine-producing states don’t have a whole lot in common when it comes to the factors of terrior that can dictate the flavor of wine, but that hasn't stopped us from finding an excuse to pop open a few cases. Luckily Colorado can grow a diverse variety of wines so we were able to match up a battle of whites without too much of a stretch.

The first time around, we didn’t get to crown a champion. The red wine blind tasting throwdown between Colorado and Virginia finished a tie due to an unfortunate accident with a bottle of petit verdot in transit from the East Coast. Methinks Colorado would have won, with a Canyon Wind petit verdot ready to compete. Sigh, we were forced to drink the inky red with a long finish from Canyon Wind and speculate after Colorado took the cabernet franc category and Virginia the red blend.

You may have stumbled upon Derek Chandler ‘s food and wine blog, Joieduvivre.com. It’s one of those great resources that showcases great recipes paired with fantastic wines – many Colorado wines too. But Chandler is just a blogger by hobby. By day, he’s in the information, technology and finance business. It doesn't exactly excite his olfactory and tasting senses.

It would seem that barrel tasting season is in full swing. In every which direction, Colorado's vineyards and wineries have been opening up the barrels and pouring glasses of not-quite-ready vino to wine lovers looking to get a preview of what will be in the bottle. The Bonacquisti Wine Co. is up next, offering samples of its 2008 cabernet sauvignon, 2008 and 2009 syrah, zin port and maybe even full pulls of the pinot gris from the tank as part of its annual Spring Barrel Tasting at Bonacquisti's place in Colorado Winery Row.
